“This report strongly reflects the work we have been involved in on diaspora nursing policy. Its main message is clear: migration systems are more effective when they recognise healthcare workers as people with families, cultures, and communities, not simply as workers filling shortages. Long-term workforce sustainability depends on supporting the whole person, not just speeding up visa processes.
We especially welcome the report’s recommendation that migrant associations and diaspora organisations be genuine partners in designing migration policies rather than simply being consulted. This is a position that Filipino nurse diaspora networks have promoted for many years. The report’s recommendations on collaboration, professional mentoring, cultural learning, and recognising overseas experience as a strength all reinforce what diaspora organisations have consistently advocated.
Most importantly, the report provides strong evidence and practical policy language that can help governments build formal, well-supported partnerships with diaspora professional organisations to strengthen Australia’s healthcare workforce.”
